In the history of the Olympics United States of America has won the greatest number of Olympic Medals at 2532, almost twice that of the next nation. It also stands highest in the independent medal collection for the Gold medal at 1022, Silver Medal at 795, Bronze Medal at 706. It is important to note that Americans have participated in 27 games out of 28 games. USSR has competed in 9 Olympic Games with an astonishing winning ratio of 112 Olympic Medals per Olympic Event and has also won 1010 medals which consist of 440 Gold Medals.

It is no surprise that World I, II, and Cold War took the highest number of human lives, but it also took a heavy toll on the Olympic Games and its History of Germany and the USSR.
It is interesting to note that the results are different when some of the nations are together.
Germany:
If the Summer Olympics results of Germany includes East Germany, West Germany, United Germany total number of medals won is 1346 (428 gold, 444 Silver and, 474 bronze) and ranks at No.2
The number of games participated by Germany, East, West, and United Germany is 54, in the other side, if the years in which FRG and GDR participated in the same years (1968, 1972, 1976, and 1980) years are treated as the same total number of games is 25, as shown in the chart.
SOVIET UNION (USSR)
